Frankie and the Bum

Frankie and I went out to pee.
The night was dark and we could hardly see.

He sniffed around for just the right place.
Such a cutesy dog with a silly face.

When he was done and ready to go
he saw something stir in the shadows below.

His hair grew stiff and his growl was like a roar,
for there was a bum sleeping in the door.

My heart raced, I thought I was done,
but nearly as much as it did for the bum.

He was scared, that was clear to see.
Frankie was upset he had watched him pee.

So, Frankie’s trip to have a poo,
I think, caused the bum to have one too.

How the west was made

When the sun is in the west, the bird returns to nest.

Xi(1) – Pronounced “sheeee“. This is a very simple Chinese character. However I thought the story was kind of cool:
The character is derived from a bird standing in its nest. It is said that when the sun sets in the west, the birds need to return to their nest to come home for the night. Couldn’t you just imagine some ancient (Gu shi hou de ren) Chinese guy sitting there drawing pictures in the sand? Then you ask him, “Which direction is that?” “Oh that? When the sun is over there the birds go here (drawing the character). It is that direction.”

I went to ShanXi and lost my wife

I went to ShanXi and lost my wife.
It was so sad, for she was little trouble in life.

We walked into the hills alone
and came upon some dead man’s bones.

For into the dragon’s lair we were
and to our surprise, he began to stir.

We ran and ran and did not look back
for fear that he might just soon attack.

Until upon that stone did stumble
my wife, she fell, and began to tumble.

I left her there, ’tis true, ’tis sad
but oh, what a good lunch, the dragon, he had.

And 55 minutes later I am in Sweden.

“It’s sweet to be in
the rain and sleet
as my two lil feet
walk down the street
IN SWEDEN!”

It could not have been easier. Around noon I headed out from my hotel to the S-train, took it down to the center station, transferred to the train to the airport and to Sweden and a total of 55 minutes later I was there! I walked out and the weather had not improved much. Still very windy. By very windy I mean bikes are falling down, flags are being ripped off, and plastic sheets are molesting people in the street.

I am not sure if it was a sign or not, but many places were closed and it was sleeting and raining, so I went to a square and found a wonderful shop to have lunch. I was worried I would not have the money to pay. In fact, I was thinking about the fact that I still had Danish money when I needed Swedish, but that was not the issue. Prices were! What is up with Scandinavia being so expensive? Have I really been in the land of $1 DVDs and no tipping for that long? Here are some of the tally’s for the day:

Actually, I will spare you that. Suffice it to say I had learned my lesson, when I realized I bought three magazines for 256 Danish Kr. which is $42 USD. (That is not a typo). The one saving grace is that I did manage to get the student discount at the castle museum :)

Check out some of the pictures from the day in Malmo. I have also posted pics from Saturday in Copenhagen. Both of these can be found on the Recent pictures on the left. You can also see that two maps have been updated . The one from Flickr and the one of places we have been. Check them out: http://beuktv.com/maps

Last, but not least, “Honey, there IS an E&Y office in Sweden (and a KPMG one ;). With all the VAT they are charging, there has GOT to be some tax biz going on.”

ee cummings

Besides being one of my favorite poets, I continue to hear his name every time I listen to 311′s “All Mixed Up”. It has a strange little line in it:

You keep me coming,That is a gal that'll kill dem stunning, woah...
The full lyrics can be seen here. I swear when I hear this that they say:
ee cummingshe was a writer that killed me stunning,, woah...
(I'm not saying it makes anymore sense.)

Wired’s Very Short Stories

Wired Magazine asked writers to produce a story in six words the same way Hemmingway did when he wrote, “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” Check out the article here and here.
My favorites are:

We went solar; sun went nova.
- Ken MacLeod

Don’t marry her. Buy a house.
- Stephen R. Donaldson

Computer, did we bring batteries? Computer?
- Eileen Gunn

Great Wall

as i sit and ponder the great wall,
i have to wonder..is that all?
i have seen the world, my life greatly enriched
and now i’m beside some bricks in a ditch?
wip…
